Combined with1 Tbsp coconut oil smoked paprika, it adds a deep and complex flavor to this soup. Here in Hawaii,4 carrots salt is commonly smoked with kiawe wood, a type of mesquite. Any other variation4 stalks celery 1 red onion of smoked salt would be equally delicious. 4 tomatoes 1 Tbsp smoked paprika D I R E C T I O N S Roughly chop the carrots and celery. Dice the red onion and set aside,1tsp smoked salt then core and chop the tomatoes and set aside.tsp ground black pepper 2 Tbsp Bragg Liquid AminosIn a large pot, place the coconut oil and heat to medium high. Add the diced red onion 1 bay leafand saut until translucent, about 7-9 minutes. Dust the onions with the smoked salt, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Allow the spices to mix with the onion and oil while 1 sprig thyme stirring, being careful not to let the spices burn. Pour in the Bragg Liquid Aminos. Add 8 c waterthe chopped tomato, allowing the tomato liquid to deglaze the pan. When the tomato 2 c dried split peasstarts to boil and break down, about 3-4 minutes, reduce the heat to medium.Add the carrots and celery and stir while they start to cook, coating all the vegetables with the seasonings. Cook the vegetable mix for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, then add the bay leaf and thyme. Do not allow the bottom of the pot to burn. Pour the water into the pot and bring the liquid to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Allow this liquid to simmer for 15-20 minutes to create a vegan stock that will infuse flavor into the peas when added. Add the split peas and cook for another 20 minutes to soften and cook them.If using an immersion blender, blend the soup until mostly pured. Leave somesmall pieces of vegetable and some peas for a nice rustic effect and texture. In aregular blender, blend 75 percent of the soup and mix back into the pot.
